Course Description

This course explores the “Long Nineteenth Century,” spanning from Napoleon’s fall to the outbreak of the Great War. Topics include the rise of liberal democracies, the shift of European monarchies toward representative institutions by 1914, the emergence of trade unions, imperialism, and the formation of nation-states. There will be lots of pictures of pretty places to visit as well.

Instructor

Doug Biggs holds a Ph.D. in Medieval History from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities). His research specialty is 14th-century and early 14th-century England, but he taught a wide range of periods across his career.
