Course Description
This course continues our exploration of modern American literature, following last fall’s study of “The Great Gatsby,” which was the partial inspiration for this novel. “The Sun Also Rises” (1926), was Hemingway’s first published novel and the work that launched his fame in America and Europe. Chronicling the hard‑drinking, louche behavior of expatriates wandering post‑World War I Europe, the novel influenced U.S. college culture and defined a generation’s style. Today, it endures as one of the earliest truly modern American novels. Reading the novel is recommended, but not required.
