Course Description

July 4, 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the unanimous vote to adopt the Declaration of Independence which has been called one of the most important documents in the world. This class will explore the path taken to reach agreement among the colonies that such a document was necessary, the choosing of the Committee of Five to write it, and the reaction to it when word spread that it had been approved.

Instructor

Jane Cox is an Iowa State University Professor Emerita and has been interested in history since she was a child and heard her great-grandmother tell stories about her childhood during the Civil War. Those stories made the past seem close and personal and not something only existing in a book.
